As the weather gets warmer, the Comox Valley RCMP typically sees an increase in calls for service, including cases of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). This type of violence describes any form of abuse that occurs within a relationship, such as physical, emotional, mental, financial, and sexual abuse. IPV affects individuals of all genders, ages, and backgrounds and often happens within the privacy of people's homes.

While it may be challenging to discuss, the Comox Valley RCMP urges those experiencing IPV to come forward and report these incidents. From 2019 to 2021, the Comox Valley RCMP received over 1100 reports of IPV.

Intimate Partner Violence has unique dynamics that are not found in other violent crimes and it has been identified as a priority for the RCMP, provincially and nationally. The Comox Valley RCMP has a dedicated team working in the Special Victims Unit (SVU), which focuses on IPV and other offences against vulnerable people. The SVU works closely with individuals and community partners to provide support and assistance to those experiencing IPV.

"We want to encourage those who are experiencing IPV to come forward and report these incidents so we can take appropriate steps to ensure their safety and the safety of their families," said Cst. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer. "By raising awareness, providing information, and offering support, we can empower individuals to recognize the signs, protect themselves, and seek assistance when facing intimate partner violence." she added.

If you or someone you know is experiencing IPV, there are several community partners within the Comox Valley who can help. These include:

The Comox Valley RCMP works closely with these partners to provide support and assistance to those in need. Remember, you are not alone, and help is available.
